news_search is keyword search over news articles only, ranked by relevance with a boost for fresher articles. Its near filter finds articles by place, and every result shows the evidence for where it is located.

Call it

news_search and web_fetch are served on /news and, like every tool you have switched on, on /mcp. Open a result with web_fetch to read the article.

Filters

Up to 100 results per call, 10 by default.

Time. recency keeps articles from the last hour, day, week, month or year (RECENCY_HOUR to RECENCY_YEAR), and publishedAfter and publishedBefore bound the publication time.

Domains. includeDomains keeps only articles from up to 50 domains and their subdomains, and excludeDomains drops them.

Articles are discovered through the feeds and news sitemaps of known news hosts and through the CC-NEWS dataset, synced every hour, and a page is labelled news by rule news.v1 only when it came from one of those routes and declares a publication date.

Location

Each article carries location signals assigned at indexing by rule geo.news.v1, each stored with its evidence. Nothing is guessed from body text, and an ambiguous name stores no signal.

Basis Means Read from
BASIS_CONTENT The story is about this place. The page's schema.org contentLocation or spatialCoverage.
BASIS_DATELINE The story was filed from this place. The dateline the article opens with, such as "PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)".
BASIS_PUBLISHER The outlet is local to this place. The Wikidata place of publication of the article's publisher.

The area. near takes one of a place name, an Overture divisionId from geo_places, a circle (a center with lon and lat and a radiusKm up to 2,000) or a bbox. A place name uses administrative containment, so "California" matches an article located in Los Angeles.

The basis. near.basis picks which signals count. By default BASIS_CONTENT and BASIS_DATELINE count, so "filed from Kyiv" and "a Kyiv local paper" stay distinguishable; add BASIS_PUBLISHER to include local outlets.
